Spellcaster Helper 2.0: Everything Is Gonna Change!

TL; DR: We will no longer store proprietary content on our servers. User creations such as Characters and Spell Lists will be lost as soon as the update goes live. Users will be able to create and use homebrew content on the platform.

The RPGist D&D 5e Spellcaster Helper was born as a personal project shortly after the release of the fifth edition of Dungeons & Dragons with the goal of assisting RPGists in managing their characters' spells.

Since its launch, the platform has gained not only several new features but also a much larger user base than I could have imagined it would ever achieve. I am very happy that the project is helping so many people, and I want to make it even better.

One thing that has stalled the development of the platform, however, is the fact that it is vulnerable to being taken down at any time by the owner of the RPG system, which has in fact taken down several sites and applications similar to the Spellcaster Helper in the past years. They own the intellectual property available on the platform, such as races, classes, and spells, and have the right and the power to ask us to take it down.

Because of this risk, I haven't spent as much time as I would like on this project that I love. I get so many excellent suggestions from you about how to improve the platform and I want to be able to work on them.

Finally, I decided to solve this problem at once, regularize the platform and eliminate the risk: all proprietary content would be removed from the platform. We will keep only the content of the SRD.

On the other hand, in the same update, one new functionality will be added: homebrew content. Users will be able to import content packages, create their own, and share them with the community. The homebrew content will be stored locally in your browser. This way, you have complete control over the materials you use in your games, and only you and those with whom you share the packages will have access to them.

These are two major changes, which come with a major consequence: the new platform architecture will be incompatible with the current one: Characters' Sheets and Spell Lists will be lost. Your user however will remain. You will continue to be able to log in to the platform as normal.

Once the transition is made, many doors will open. Personally, I’m very excited. I will finally be able to develop a mobile application for the Spellcaster Helper, compatible with the same homebrew content packages on the platform. I will be able to add Feats, Warlock Invocations, and work on so many other ideas that have been on the side until then.

Anyway, the update still doesn't have an exact date to air. Stay tuned, I'll let you know in advance.
